Rinoa had expected a number of things from this island, thanks to the warnings at the picnic, but the sentient flowers? Those had taken her by surprise.

They were adorable. They sang little songs and swayed in the wind and asked nosy questions about her love life.

"No, we broke up months ago," she explained. "The distance was too hard, since he was still at Garden. We stayed in touch, though."

A sympathetic chorus of ohhhhhhhhhhhhh's.

Who knew that flowers wanted to hear all about your ex-boyfriends?

(door and post open!)

Squall stepped into the room and glared at Rinoa. He'd caught the last few things she'd said while he was in the hall.

"And then he decided to serve the evil sorceress," he commented.

He hadn't actually noticed the flowers, yet.

Squall shrugged. "We're not, except in battle. He chose poorly."

And maybe, if circumstances had been different, their positions might be reversed. Who knew?

"But he's still wrong for you."

"He lets his emotions interfere with his assignments," Squall grumbled. "He only cares about himself. He's arrogant, and immature."

All of that, without a hint of irony or self-awareness.

"And I chose to be your knight because of who you are," he insisted. "Seifer just thinks the idea of being a sorceress's knight is romantic."

Squall shrugged. "No. Seifer abandoned the team he was supposed to be leading. That's why he failed."

(Not only does he not think, but he never admits his mistakes, either.)

"When he follows orders, he's qualified."

"Why?" Squall asked.

If she was mad at him because he'd done something wrong, he'd fix it! He had no idea what she was mad about, though.

"I'm never very far away," Squall told her. Because he wasn't. When he didn't know where she was, he got nervous. "But if you want, I'll stay closer. Should I come to class with you?"

That might be going a bit too far. Maybe. Maybe not. He should have signed up for the same classes as her.

Squall stared at her, confused. "No, I didn't," he insisted. "You're here."

(She's not making any sense. Why are people always so hard to understand?)

"I didn't," Squall stated flatly.

Because he hadn't ever been here before. It was a different him, a strange half-shadow who had been here before, and not HIM. He didn't understand it, and he didn't feel like bothering.

"The other me wouldn't have left you without a VERY good reason," Squall insisted.

"But it hasn't happened yet, and I'm not going to LET it happen. The rules are diferent on this island."

"It's A future," Squall countered. "Just a possibility. Maybe not even that." He picked a few of the flowers and thrust them in her face. "This place isn't normal!" he insisted. "And I won't let that be me."

Squall sighed. "...I didn't. They misinterpreted me."

He glared at the flowers.

He could argue with that, but what was the point? The flowers were conspiring against him. "Whatever," he told her. "I didn't meant it like that, but interpret it however you want."

Except for the tiny little bit of him that he wouldn't admit to that DID mean it like that.

"The point is, this place is crazy."

Well, maybe he did, a little bit. Was that so wrong?

"No," he insisted. "I don't dance." And, to get away from dangerous topics like that, he jumped into the reason he stopped by. "Why weren't you at the Reserves meeting?"

Sometimes, Squall just didn't feel like dealing with people, okay? And sometimes his mun was feeling off and forgot to ping in.

He ducked her question and went back to his, instead. "Not that Reserves, the other one.". He shrugged. "Now that you're a sorceress, did you decide to stop being a fighter?"

"You always held your own," Squall told her with a shrug. "Strategy is the one thing you suck at. Fighting, you're pretty good. You don't have our training, but your instincts are good."

Squall glared at the flowers and didn't feel at ALL guilty about it.

"I didn't say you weren't better than the whole rest of your group," Squall countered. "Because you are. But the better plan would have been to just blow up the train. Easier to accomplish, less work, and more effective."

From: [identity profile] whateverknight.livejournal.com
"It's how soldiers think," Squall clarified. "No, the person who replaced him wouldn't give you what you wanted, and yes, Timber would probably be punished, but President Deling was an oppressive dictator who used the constant fighting to get the people's support. Cut off the head, and the monster dies."

That was a lot of words for Squall, and he needed to take a deep breath afterwards.

Also, he was completely glossing over the part where the sorceress had taken control away from Deling, but they hadn't known that at the time of the train mission.

Squall shrugged. "Threaten him with what? Offer him what? And what would you do after you let him go and he broke all his promises?"

Rinoa was being hopelessly naive.

Squall blinked at her. "Our orders were to obey your instructions," he answered flatly. Besides, they'd SUGGESTED they should just blow up the train instead. It wasn't their fault that the Forest Owls stuck to the original plan.

"Besides, it did work."

From: [identity profile] whateverknight.livejournal.com
"There wasn't time to come up with a better plan," Squall answered. "The train was already on its way."

Besides, they'd been hired to help the revolution, not be the revolution. The Forest Owls were just playing at being revolutionaries, and they weren't going to be serious about it.

"We would have helped come up with a better plan for the next operation," Squall insisted. "But you would still have had the final choice of whether to follow our advice."

He shrugged. "Ultimate responsibility still belongs to the client. SeeD is just the hired help."

"We don't accept every job," Squall told her. "And the commander of SeeD can cancel a job."

They weren't monsters, after all.

Didn't she understand the difference? He was an enemy! In war, sometimes people got hurt. It was the job of a good soldier to make sure it only happened to people on the other side.

SeeD got to pick and choose their battles, to always be on the right side... but even if they didn't, a job was a job. Rinoa didn't understand that, wasn't going to understand that. She was a fighter, but not a soldier.

He tried to argue an easier tack, instead. "Weren't there a lot of people who wanted to kill President Deling? He did bad things."
